Accomplished agent says she’s ready for 25 more
Phyllis Wolborsky seemed like an unlikely fit for real estate when she started her career in 1969. She was 27, mother of a 2-year-old son with one on the way. Her husband Bernie traveled extensively for his sales career.
But Wolborsky was intrigued when a friend suggested she earn her license. She passed the test, gave birth to her second son (and two more within six years) – and never looked back.
Fifty years later, Wolborsky is not retiring, but rather, looking forward to what lies ahead. As leader of The Wolborsky Group in the Allen Tate Realtors® Raleigh-Falls of Neuse office, Wolborsky is celebrating her 50th consecutive year in the business. That’s a milestone rarely achieved by any professional – and even fewer Realtors.
“I’ve sold homes to my clients’ children and grandchildren,” Wolborsky said. “I’ve been very fortunate to do what I love to do.”
“Phyllis is a legend. She truly represents everything right about real estate. She’s extremely committed to her family, her clients and her colleagues. In 50 years, she has seen many changes in the market and the industry, and she continues to excel year after year,” said Phyllis Brookshire, president, Allen Tate Realtors.
Wolborsky spent the first 30 years of her career as a solo agent, then welcomed her own children into the business in 1998. Today, sons Brian, Kevin and Mitchell and daughter-in-law Jennifer are team members of The Wolborsky Group. They have been affiliated with Allen Tate since 2007, when the company entered the Triangle market, and are consistently ranked among the company’s top agents.
Wolborsky estimates that she has helped with at least 5,000 transactions in her five-decade career. She remembers her first client, and how she handled it.
“They called and asked to speak to me. So I put them on hold, and called my husband and asked him what to do. He said to relax and start with hello,” she said.
“Bernie loved referring to himself as Mr. Phyllis,” Wolborsky said. “He handled all of my marketing.”
A real estate career often demands going above and beyond for clients. Wolborsky recalls one transaction – in the middle of writing a contract – when her clients received a call about soccer tryouts. She stopped writing the contract, and whisked the couple off to her home, where there was a closet full of soccer cleats waiting for their son to choose from.
“He made the team, and we finished the contract,” she said.
While real estate has changed over the years, Wolborsky still insists on a personal relationship with each client.
“The internet has changed the industry, but it’s much less personal. You can’t do business with just your fingers and not your heart,” she said. “You’re helping plant someone where they can make memories.”
Wolborsky is proud that she has been able to meet or exceed the previous year’s earnings throughout her career.
“But thank you notes from satisfied clients are just as good as going to the bank,” she said. “And I’m well-respected by clients and agents alike. That means a lot.”
If Wolborsky could have a wish, it would be to continue her career for another 25 years.
“Do I see myself still selling homes at 103? Probably not, but I’m going to try,” she said.
