Insulation Checklist

  • insulationMake a complete list of your home’s insulation needs. Don’t forget water heaters and pipes, doors and windows and the basement.
  • Spray insulation is a good option for small, hard-to-reach places. Insulation contractors are your best bet for larger projects, as they can offer a range of materials to meet your needs and budget.
  • A minimum of 12 inches of insulation is desirable in your attic. A well-insulated attic is very cold. If you see icicles on the eaves of your home, it means your attic is too warm and water run-off may damage your roof.
  • Apply weather stripping around doors and windows. Make sure the surface is dry and the temperature is above 20 degrees F when you apply it. Window curtains and blinds also help with insulation.
  • Foil bubble insulation on your garage door will help make this space more comfortable.
  • Take time to understand R-value. The higher the R-value, the more efficient the insulation.
  • Do not limit yourself to the minimum level of insulation. Go with a higher level to increase energy efficiency and comfort, and decrease your energy bill.
